Often when approaching quality improvement, people jump at using new tools. In challenging economic times there may be additional concerns trying new approaches. Lean models and tools helping to improve organizational effectiveness apply to manufacturing and service businesses alike, and it is mainly about people; Toyota say that Lean is 90% people and 10% tools. Many approaches from the Lean toolbox may be used in business applications but the effectiveness of deployment is dependent on how the tool is used and by whom.
